FIRE DAMAGES LOCAL BUSINESS — A popular Bridgeport eatery sustained damage after a fire started in the alley behind the establishment Sunday night. The fire started at about 8:30 p.m. behind Crazy Pablo’s Cantina in the 1000 block of Halsell Street. “A couple of workers were doing some construction work and welding behind Crazy Pablo’s, basically in the vicinity of the patio area,” said Bridgeport Police Chief Steve Stanford. “They had left to go get something to eat somewhere, and a fire started in the alley. We received a 911 call, and luckily we had four firefighters at the fire station.” Stanford said Bridgeport firefighters were at the scene in about four to five minutes after the call went out. Firefighters from Decatur also responded to the scene to provide mutual aid. ”When they arrived on scene, they made an offensive game plan and attacked the fire showing outside the building,” he said. “They did a fantastic job. A lot of those buildings share common walls — and even common attics. Some of the businesses on the east and west side of Crazy Pablo’s suffered smoke damage, but it was very minimal.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is also partnering in the project by providing information about the stormwater flows to find a permanent solution as more of the region develops.
