CEDAR CITY — The 20 semifinalist designs for a proposed new Utah state flag were set up in Cedar City on Thursday.

Workers installed the array of 20 flags in a patch of grass known as the “Greenshow Commons” at the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts on the Southern Utah University campus.

The temporary popup exhibit is one of three in the state that were unveiled Thursday morning, with the other two being located in Salt Lake City and Logan.

Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson spoke at the Salt Lake City event, which was held at the state Capitol Building. Behind her stood several schoolchildren whose designs helped inspire the semifinalists.

“Utahns, we took 7,000 of your flag designs and refined them into a set of 20 unique flags that represent our history, culture, landscapes, and people,” Henderson said in a tweet.

“It’s exciting that Cedar City and the SUU campus was selected as an ideal location to come and see these final flag ideas actually flying,” Donna Law said in a Southern Utah University news release. Law is executive director of development and government relations at SUU and a member of one of several More Than a Flag subcommittees.

“This is an opportunity to bring your family and friends to participate in a broad statewide conversation to explore the colors, symbols and meaning of elements that will become our new state flag,” Law added.

The flags will be on display until Oct. 5. Members of the public are invited to provide feedback at the flag.utah.gov website.
